Gamers Forgo Sleep Vying for Guinness Mobile Gaming Record
At E3 this year, Qualcomm challenged gamers to break the Guinness World Record for the “Longest Mobile Gaming Marathon on a Tablet.” And just how long does one have to play to break that record? 26 hours, zero minutes, and two seconds worth of mind-numbing gameplay. And they've done it.
Powered by copious amounts of coffee and energy drinks, 32 gamers went head-to-head on Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9s, a tablet powered by Qualcomm's gaming chip, Snapdragon. To break the record, gamers chose one of five games: GT Racing: Motor Academy (Gameloft), Virtua Tennis (Sega), Galaga: Special Edition (NAMCO Bandai), Fruit Ninja (Halfbrick), Blood & Glory (Glu).
By the end of the two day marathon, five gamers had thrown in the towel, leaving 26 gamers for the history books. Efren Ballestamon from Chula Vista, California walked away with the grand prize of $20,000 for staying in the game for all 26 hours and achieving the all around high score in Homerun Battle 2, by Com2uS.
First Prize: Efren Ballestamon, winner of $20,000 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab
Second Prize: Victor Gonzalez, winner of $15,000 and a Samsung Galaxy 8.9 Tab
Third Prize: Shaun Devault, winner of $7,000 and a Samsung Galaxy 8.9 Tab
Fourth Prize: Dustin Best, winner of $5,000 and a Samsung Galaxy 8.9 Tab
Fifth Prize: Kevin Marquez, winner of $3,000 and a Samsung Galaxy 8.9 Tab
Besides the prizes, gamers will have supreme bragging rights...that is until, someone goes for the new record: 26 hours, zero minutes, and three seconds.
